Document Submission Steps

  1. 1

Apply for the Namibia Digital Nomad Visa at the Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration portal (mha.gov.na) or at the Namibian embassy/high commission in your country — the application form is a standard Visa Form 1.

  2. 2

Provide proof of remote employment: signed employment contract or service agreements confirming all income is earned from sources outside Namibia.

  3. 3

Submit 3 months of bank statements showing average monthly income of at least USD 2,000 equivalent.

  4. 4

Obtain health insurance covering Namibia — while not explicitly mandated at the application stage, the MHA expects applicants to demonstrate financial self-sufficiency, and health coverage is highly recommended given Namibia's limited public healthcare capacity.

  5. 5

Provide a clean criminal background check from your country of citizenship, apostillised; Namibia accepts English-language apostillised documents without additional translation.

  6. 6

Pay the visa application fee of approximately USD 90 (NAD 1,650) at the MHA office or via designated bank transfer.

  7. 7

Upon arrival, obtain the entry stamp from the Namibia Immigration Control checkpoint; report to the nearest MHA Regional Immigration Office within 30 days for formal permit registration if staying beyond 90 days.

  8. 8

To extend within Namibia for the second 6-month period, submit a renewal application to the MHA at least 30 days before expiry of the first permit — include the same documentation as the initial application plus a Namibian address confirmation.

Tax Treatment for Nomads

Namibia's Income Tax Act 24/1981 (as amended) applies a source-based taxation principle for non-residents: only income from Namibian sources is taxable. Digital Nomad Visa holders who earn exclusively from non-Namibian clients or employers have zero Namibian income tax liability, regardless of how much time they spend in Namibia during the visa period. This clean territorial exemption requires no registration, no special regime application, and no minimum threshold — it is the default treatment under Namibian law.

For nomads who establish a Namibian Close Corporation (CC) or Private Company (Pty Ltd) to conduct business, the Namibian CIT rate is 32% on locally-sourced profits — not competitive with the UAE or Georgian alternatives. However, a Namibian CC invoicing exclusively foreign clients for digital services earns no Namibian-source income and is subject to 0% CIT under the source principle. The VAT registration threshold is NAD 500,000 (~USD 26,000) annual turnover — below this, no VAT registration is required.

The most significant cost-of-living advantage that makes Namibia's 0% foreign-income tax particularly compelling is Namibia's extraordinary affordability: monthly living costs in Windhoek or coastal towns (Swakopmund, Walvis Bay) range from USD 700–1,500 per month for a comfortable lifestyle, versus USD 2,500–4,000 in Lisbon or Barcelona. The combination of 0% tax on foreign income, competitive telecommunications infrastructure (fibre internet available in Windhoek), and sub-USD 1,500/month cost of living creates a strong net savings rate for nomads willing to embrace a non-mainstream destination.

Permanent Residency & Citizenship Path

Namibia's Digital Nomad Visa launched in 2023 provides a 6-month initial stay permit for non-African Union citizens, renewable once within Namibia for a further 6 months — giving a maximum 12-month consecutive stay under this specific category. At the end of 12 months, the holder must exit Namibia and re-apply from abroad; there is no direct conversion to long-term residency under the Digital Nomad Visa pathway as currently legislated.

The pathway to Permanent Residency in Namibia for non-SADC nationals runs through the Permanent Residence Permit (PRP), governed by Section 26 of the Immigration Control Act 7/1993. Eligibility is primarily through spousal ties to a Namibian citizen, formal employment with a Namibian entity under a Work Visa, or qualifying investment (minimum NAD 1.5 million business investment under Section 26(3)(h)). A Digital Nomad Visa does not count as qualifying residency toward the PRP timeline — nominally 5 years of qualifying legal residence is required, but this must be under a Permanent Residence Permit 'holding' category rather than the nomad visa itself.

Namibian Citizenship (Namibiese Burgerskap) requires 5 years of permanent residency plus renunciation of prior citizenship (Namibia generally does not recognise dual citizenship for naturalised citizens, except for those born of mixed Namibian/foreign parentage). Given these restrictive naturalisation criteria and the limited long-term residency pathway from the nomad visa, Namibia is best positioned as a 6–12 month lifestyle base rather than a long-term settlement destination.

Banking & Account Opening

Namibian bank account opening for Digital Nomad Visa holders requires the visa stamp/permit, passport, proof of Namibian address (rental contract or hotel accommodation letter), and a reference letter from a home country bank. First National Bank Namibia (FNB) and Standard Bank Namibia are the most accessible for foreigners. FNB's eWallet product provides immediate access to NAD transfers and ATM withdrawals without a full account. For USD/EUR retention, maintaining a Wise or Revolut account for international receipts and withdrawing NAD locally via ATM at competitive rates (FNB/Standard Bank offer real exchange rates with low ATM fees) is more efficient than opening a full corporate account for a 6-month stay. Bank Windhoek's Yes Account (youth/transient account) has reduced documentation requirements and is accessible to non-residents.

Health Insurance Compliance

Namibia has no mandatory health insurance requirement in the Digital Nomad Visa regulations, but maintaining comprehensive international coverage is essential. Namibia's public health system is concentrated in Windhoek and the North; emergency services outside urban areas are limited. Private hospitals in Windhoek (Mediclinic Windhoek, Rhino Park Private Hospital) provide good quality care at moderate cost — a standard hospitalisation runs approximately USD 500–2,000, far below US equivalents. Medical evacuations to Cape Town or Johannesburg cost USD 8,000–15,000 without insurance and are the primary financial risk for nomads in remote areas. SafetyWing Nomad Insurance (WorldWide tier) is the most popular choice for budget-conscious nomads in Namibia at USD 40–55/month; IMG Nomad or Explorer tiers provide more comprehensive cover at USD 80–120/month with explicit medical evacuation coverage. Ensure the chosen policy explicitly includes Namibia in its coverage territory.
