Document Submission Steps

  1. 1

Third-country nationals must apply for a long-stay visa (Dvalarleyfi) from the Directorate of Immigration (Útlendingastofnun, UTL) before arrival — Iceland does not operate a visa-on-arrival long-stay scheme.

  2. 2

Submit the UTL online application (utl.is) under the category 'Remote Work' or 'Independent Means' — specify the basis for income (employment from abroad or self-employment) and provide supporting documentation.

  3. 3

Compile income proof: 3–6 months of bank statements showing consistent monthly income of at least USD 8,300 equivalent (ISK 1.15 million/month at current rates).

  4. 4

Obtain health insurance covering Iceland with minimum EUR 30,000 Schengen-standard medical cover — Iceland is a Schengen EEA member, so full Schengen-compliant coverage is required.

  5. 5

Provide a criminal background check apostillised from country of citizenship and all countries of residence in the last 5 years.

  6. 6

Book and attend a consular appointment at the nearest Icelandic embassy or consulate; Iceland's consular network is limited, so this may require travel to a third country with Icelandic consular representation.

  7. 7

After arrival, register at the Þjóðskrá Íslands (National Registry) for an Icelandic kennitala (national ID number) — required for all financial, healthcare, and government interactions.

  8. 8

Register with the Icelandic Tax Directorate (Skatturinn — skattar.is) for a tax ID (kennitala dual-use for individuals) and declare Icelandic tax residency if planning to stay more than 183 days.

Tax Treatment for Nomads

Iceland's personal income tax system is among the highest in the world: the effective combined rate for most income levels — including national income tax, municipal tax surcharge, and mandatory pension contributions — reaches approximately 36.94% as the blended rate at average income levels, rising to over 46% at the top marginal bracket above ISK 11.5 million/year (~USD 83,000). This makes Iceland one of the least tax-efficient destinations in the VisaForge database from a pure income retention perspective.

However, for nomads for whom Iceland is a lifestyle or strategic preference, there are limited but real optimisation strategies. First, the Icelandic tax system provides significant deductions for pension contributions: mandatory employer and employee pension contributions (up to 12% of gross income) are tax-deductible, effectively reducing the taxable income base. Second, Iceland has signed 43 bilateral tax treaties which, in most cases, prevent double taxation — nomads who establish Icelandic tax residency and fully surrender prior-country tax residency avoid paying tax in two jurisdictions simultaneously, which is the primary risk rather than the rate itself.

For high-net-worth nomads with investment portfolios, Iceland's capital gains tax on listed equity is a flat 22% — lower than many EU equivalents and significantly lower than top-bracket income tax. Structuring passive income (dividends, capital gains) as the primary income stream, with earned income minimised or earned through a lower-tax foreign entity, reduces the Iceland-taxable income base. Iceland does not levy an inheritance tax, a wealth tax, or a real estate transfer tax (beyond a small registration fee), making it attractive for estate planning despite the high income tax rates.

Permanent Residency & Citizenship Path

Iceland's pathway to permanent residency is among the most clearly defined in the Schengen Area. Under the Act on Foreigners No. 80/2016, third-country nationals who have legally resided in Iceland for 3 continuous years under a qualifying residence permit may apply for Permanent Residence (Ótímabundin dvalarleyfi). The long-stay remote-work visa category, if converted to a formal Temporary Residence Permit after entry, contributes qualifying years from the permit issue date. The three-year clock requires at least 6 months of physical presence in Iceland per year and no single absence exceeding 6 consecutive months.

After obtaining Permanent Residency, Icelandic Citizenship (Íslenskt ríkisborgararétt) is available after 7 years of continuous legal residence under the Icelandic Citizenship Act No. 100/1952. The 7-year period is measured from the date of first legal residence permit, not from permanent residency. Language requirement: Icelandic language proficiency at B1 level (Nordic Language Proficiency Test) is formally required but has been applied with varying rigour. Iceland permits dual nationality since 2004, making naturalisation attractive for EU/UK/US citizens.

Practical note: Iceland's extremely high cost of living and the demanding nature of Icelandic winters (4 hours of daylight in December) contribute to the relatively high dropout rate among aspiring long-term nomad residents. The permanent residency route is most viable for nomads who have a specific professional, research, or personal connection to Iceland, or those for whom Icelandic passport strength (rank #5 globally, Henley 2026) justifies the premium cost base.

Banking & Account Opening

Icelandic bank accounts require a kennitala (national ID), passport, and proof of Icelandic address. Landsbankinn and Íslandsbanki are the primary banks; both offer English-language digital banking. Arion Bank provides online account opening for kennitala holders without physical branch visit. The Icelandic króna (ISK) is the domestic currency — Iceland is not in the Eurozone despite being a Schengen EEA member. ISK is a volatile currency; nomads receiving USD or EUR income are advised to maintain foreign-currency accounts (Wise, Revolut) and convert to ISK only for immediate local expenses to minimise FX risk. Landsbankinn's multi-currency account holds USD, EUR, GBP, and ISK in a single product — most practical for nomads with multi-currency income.

Health Insurance Compliance

Iceland's Schengen EEA membership requires the same Schengen health insurance standards as EU member states for long-stay visa applicants: minimum EUR 30,000 medical coverage, repatriation clause, valid across the full Schengen Zone including Iceland, for the full permit duration. After establishing legal residence and registering for kennitala, nomads may enroll in the Sjúkratryggingar Íslands (Icelandic Health Insurance) — the national health system — which provides access to Landspítali National University Hospital and the GP (lækni) network on a cost-shared basis. State-registered residents pay a standard GP consultation fee of approximately ISK 600–1,500 (USD 4–11). Mental health services are a specific strength of the Icelandic health system, with comprehensive national coverage. International private health insurance is recommended for the period before kennitala registration and for dental care (only partially covered by national insurance). Cigna Global and Allianz Care are the most commonly used international plans for Iceland-based nomads.
